Search Engine Know How
Google and the other major search engines, despite myths to the contrary, haven't index or even located all the content that currently on line and as importantly they haven't found and followed all the intermingling links that exist between sites. As a matter of fact they haven't even come close. If you have a large site of 100 pages and Google has indexed 80 of them a full 20% of your content isn't exposed to the Public when they pull up the SERP (Search Engine Results Page). The difference can be really harmful when the majority of your links from other sites fall upon those 20 non indexed pages. This difference is called "Saturation Rate". Actually in this case a saturation of %80 (Page Saturation)is pretty good. Obviously the ideal is to have %100 of your pages indexed. Saturation Rates are used to describe both pages and links that have been indexed in the search engines from your website. In the above example say the website has 200 incoming links but a full 150 of them are directed at the 20 pages that aren't indexed. Your link saturation rate is only %25! Thats going to hurt your page rank and of course your business. The vast majority of webmasters don't have a proper understanding of the mechcanics of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and although most know the importance of getting indexed few bother to understand the potentially devastating effect of "Saturation Rates" for both site pages and incoming links. Knowledge is power and you now know what to look for and can implement strategies to increase your saturation rates, here's where to look. Your sites common log file should be full of inbound referrer information and it's usually located (on most linux hosted sites) below the public html root folder. Most hosts include site statistics in their hosting programs. Take a look and spend some time figuring out where your links are coming from and what page they are going to. Match them up with the reports you can get from the search engines themselves. A good place to start is Google's Webmaster Tools Dashboard. If you haven't entered your sites you need to do that immediately. Add the necessary code from Google and get your site verified as soon as possible. Use the tools available from Goolgle's Dashboard and learn what pages of your site (sites) are indexed and what pages aren't find out which links are on pages not indexed and take action to correct the problem. |
